CP207 – Missing or Incorrect Information

Needs Attention: Missing or Incorrect Information (ROFTL)

What It Means:

The IRS sends a CP207 notice if there is missing or incorrect information on a tax deposit schedule – otherwise known as the Record of Federal Tax Liability (ROFTL). They are sending this notice because they require additional information before they will accept your ROFTL with your tax return.

Next Steps:

Read your CP207 notice carefully. Please complete a new ROFTL and send it to the address listed in your notice within 45 days of the date indicated on your CP207.

Be sure to:

  • Report each tax liability. If you’re on a monthly schedule, list your total liability by month. For those on a semi-weekly schedule, the tax liability should be listed for each pay date.
  • Do not report your deposits.
  • Do not include negative amounts. Ifyou need to decrease your tax liability, apply it to the corresponding liability amount, but do not go below zero. You can apply any remaining decrease to later amounts.
  • Be sure the total amount on your ROFTL schedule matches the total tax liability on your tax return.

Failure to respond to your CP207 will result in the IRS assessing penalty fees (between 2% and 15%) for any amounts not deposited correctly or on time. The IRS will figure the penalty amount by averaging your total tax liability across the tax period.
