CP503 – Second Reminder of Unpaid Taxes

Urgent: Balance Due Reminder

What It Means:

A CP503 notice is the last automated letter that the IRS will send, reminding you that you have an unpaid tax balance. This notice is sent after previous notices, such as CP14 and CP501, were ignored. Failure to respond will result in more aggressive collection actions, such as a Notice of Federal Tax Lien and asset seizure (tax levy).

Next Steps:

Carefully review your CP503 notice and make a note of the deadline date to respond (pay).

If you agree with the amount owed, you should:

  • Pay the amount in full immediately, or
  • Set up a payment plan, or
  • Request hardship relief through an Offer in Compromise (settle for less than you owe) or Currently Not Collectible (CNC) status.

If you disagree with the amount due, you should:

  • Contact the IRS at the number listed in your CP503 notice to dispute the total owed. Make sure you have proof of payments and any other relevant information on hand.

You can also reach out to a tax professional to explore your available options or to dispute the amount in question.
