CP504 – Final Notice of Balance Due
What It Means:
A CP504 notice is the last balance due reminder before the IRS moves to seize your bank accounts and other business assets. The IRS is required to send a Notice of Intent to Levy under Internal Revenue Code section 6331(d).
Next Steps:
Read your CP504 notice and make a note of the payment deadline. You generally have 30 days from the notice date to pay in full or make other arrangements.
If you agree with the amount owed, you should:
- Pay the amount in full immediately, or
- Request a payment plan, or
- Explore other tax relief options, such as an Offer in Compromise (settle for less than you owe) or Currently Not Collectible (CNC) status.
If you disagree with the amount due, you should:
- Contact the IRS immediately at the number listed in your CP504 notice.
You can also contact a tax professional to learn more about your available options or to dispute the amount in question.
