CP14 – First Notice of Balance Due
What It Means:
The IRS sends CP14 notices to taxpayers and businesses that owe $5 or more in taxes. This is typically the first notice of a balance due. It will alert you to the amount owed, including any penalties and interest, and provide a deadline date for payment (usually 21 days).
Next Steps:
The first step is to thoroughly review your CP14 notice and make sure the information provided matches your tax return.
If you agree with the amount assessed, you can:
- Pay the amount in full by the designated deadline date, or
- Make payment arrangements. This may include entering into an installment agreement, submitting an Offer in Compromise, or requesting Currently Not Collectible status (financial hardship).
If you disagree with the total amount due, you should:
- Contact the IRS at the number listed in your CP14 notice and speak with a representative, or
- Reach out to a tax professional for help. A tax specialist can review your return and determine if any omissions or mistakes were made. If any corrections are needed, they can file an amended return on your behalf and represent you before the IRS.
